Welcome to the Duvet Covers and Bedspreads Guide. Select the ideal
coverings for your bed and you will be rewarded long lasting bedware
decor which complements the rest of the room.
To begin with, it is worthwhile to clarify just what constitutes duvet
covers, bedspreads and also down comforters. In different parts
of the world, each of these bed coverings are more well-known,
despite their similar functions and appearances.
Duvet covers and down comforters are the same thing - two pieces
of fabric sewn together with down between them. Often times however,
some people will use the word "duvet" when they really
mean "duvet cover" or "comforter cover" -
this is the piece that goes over the comforter in the same way
that a pillow case goes over a pillow. We highly recommend the
use of a comforter cover with all comforters. They protect the
comforter and help keep it clean, since down should not be washed
very often. It is much better to wash the comforter cover weekly,
and wash the comforter only when absolutely necessary. We recommend
washing the comforter every 5-7 years.
Coverlets are more like bedspreads. They do not have down in it, it
might be chenille, or a matelasse fabric - something that is not
fluffy like a comforters. A coverlet covers the top of the bed
and hangs down a few inches on each side. A bedspread, is like
a coverlet but larger, it will hang over the bed to the floor.
To order any of the above items, we recommend the extensive range
available at Brylane Home.
DUVET COVERS
Weight:
When selecting a duvet cover the major point to note is that
the higher quality the down is, the warmer and lighter the duvet
will be. The weight of a duvet is not the all important factor,
instead the ability of the down to trap air is what keeps you
warm. Weighty duvets manufactured from an inferior quality down
do little other than weigh you down.
Warmth:
It is also important to match the required duvet warmth
with your sleeping arrangement. For example, you need to
take into account whether you sleep with the window open
and also how severe the seasonal weather changes are.
Cleaning:
It is best to wash each duvet one at a time in your
washing machine. Overloading will mean the duvets do not
get fully cleaned and this will also contribute to
excessive wrinkles. It is also important to periodically
wash the down, otherwise it will lose some of its
insulation properties and will be flatter in appearance.
Down should only be washed in cool water with a mild
soap.
BEDSPREADS
Bedspreads do not have an inside. Instead they are similar to a
large blanket which is placed over the bed.
Cleaning
When cleaning fine bedspreads you should avoid overloading the machine.
This prevents long fibers such as Egyptian cotton getting broken. If
presoaking is required, this should be done in cold water. The main
washing should be done in warm water with a gentle washing powder or
soap. Place the bedspreads in the washing machine, then allow the machine
to fill up with water and begin agitating before you add the washing
powder. Once the cycle is complete, remove the bedspread from the machine
promptly - this helps minimize wrinkling. Shaking the bedspread before
allowing it to dry will also reduce wrinkling.
DOWN COMFORTERS
Selecting:
When selecting a down comforter the most critical element is of
course the down. This is what keeps the warmth. Down is sourced geese's
breasts. Mature birds produce larger clusters of down, which are more
resilient and better insulators. Ultimately these factors increase the
longevity of your down comforter.
The shape and form of these clusters give them insulation properties.
These clusters permit moisture to escape, allowing you to keep
cool and dry in the hot summer months.
BEDROOM DECOR
Regardless of whether you select as duvet, down comforter or bedspread,
it is reasonably important to ensure this selection complements the
rest of your bedroom decor. It has been suggested that you should steer
away from having dark colored bedware, such as shades of black or dark
blue. Another suggestion is to avoid a white duvet or bedspread - beds
are frequently used as a place to put items on, and so it is possible
for dirt or grit to be transferred onto the bed covering this way.
Before selecting a color for your duvet, comforter or bedspread, you
should first take into account the other features of the bedroom.
How will this look in relation to the curtains, carpet and furnishings.
Not only does the color need to match, but the design should also
be consistent.

bedspreads, or wish to purchase these products, we recommend Brylane Home.
